I had the pleasure of reconnecting with Luke Nowland, personal trainer, strength and conditioning specialist, nutritional coach, and owner of Nowland Performance, based out of Pacific Beach here in San Diego. A fellow San Diego local, as well as fellow Saintsman, Luke specializes in functional strength development for athletes and the general population through movement patterns, movement optimization, and pain-free living. Luke and I went to high school together, where he was the strongest guy in the weight room! It’s exciting to see him share that passion with the San Diego community.

Luke offers 1-on-1 personal training, small group training, online training, and nutritional programming. These separate services ensure that any and all fitness goals can be met, whether an individual needs intimate, face-to-face training or set guidelines to follow.

 

When asked about his how he trains, Luke had this to say; “My core philosophy centers around the four pillars of health: Training, Nutrition, Mindset, and Recovery. These are the ‘big rocks’ taking people from where they are, to where they want to go. After determining a client’s goals, training sessions are built around conditioning, mobility, hypertrophy, and strength.” Luke touched on a point that I cover with my clientele as well - the balance of inputs and outputs. To be short, programs, whether they be training or treatment plans, should be catered to an individual’s goals and be built around a realistic regimen - or a timeline that a client can commit to but also one that utilizes readily available resources. There’s no point in recommending a program that is built on 5 sessions per week if the individual can only commit to 3, for example.

“This all comes from my personal training experiences - I had the strength, but I didn’t have the mobility that should compliment it. I was 19 with back pain, my shoulders would hurt, my ankles would hurt, I had to get out of the mindset of numbers. It’s not just about hitting, say, a 250 pound bench press. It’s cool if that’s your goal, and I’m going to help you get that, but there’s so much more to the health, longevity, and feeling good that should be addressed as well. I tell my clients, yeah, your short-term goal is a 400 pound deadlift, but your long-term goal should be the ability to pick up your grandkids when your retired. That’s especially true with the clients that have a lot of room to improve when it comes to mobility.”

Starting his career with online training and nutritional programming, Luke built his personal training business at the same time and blends the two realms to provide an all-encompassing approach to coaching. He works with current and former athletes to transition into a more individual training routines. He also assists individuals coming out of physical therapy build on their foundation of rehab. Most importantly, Luke looks to help anyone who wants to feel healthy and strong.

Although he holds his Personal Training Certification (CPT) and Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), he describes his role as more like a coach; “People have this idea of personal training as coming into the gym X amount of times per week, getting your workout in, and leaving. In my mind, a coach is more of that overarching position that includes nutrition, mindset, and recovery.”

I asked Luke what his biggest takeaway would be, Luke said this, “The one thing I tell all my clients and blast all over social media is to just be 1% better. It’s a never-ending process of growth and progression - and that’s not a bad thing! There’s always another level or step you can do. Whether it be your fitness life or your professional life, there’s so much to learn.”
